Was today Typical?

Yes and No
While today I would typically be running the SF marathon, either a half or full, I also was running it for 2 people that our families have lost this year. My big sis, and a close friend, but family member of my wife.

Not Typical
The weather wasn’t exactly the same, it favored me this time. As a big runner, and not to make excuses, I generate a lot of heat, and I weigh, on my lightest day, I’m usually happy and healthy at 220lbs. This cold rainy misty weather provided the coolant I needed to press harder than I ever had.

I also showed up extremely late. I usually make it right when the last corral is preparing to take off, but the starting line was reversed for the 10/5k. I was allowed to cross it to start my chip, but I had to press threw a crowd and make up for 8 minutes of loss time.

I ran as smooth as I could, but also as hard as my body would allow me. I wanted to do it for those we lost, for their memory, and because they could no longer do it. It made me happy, I actually appreciate the fact I started late. I caught up with the latest corral after about an hour, and I caught up with my corral after about 2.

I enjoy the non typical days, sometimes it brings a calmness in the chaos that I sometimes thrive in. You, much like me and everyone, can make a game out of anything when you are trying to succeed. We only have one life, figure out ways to enjoy it, don’t focus on what eveyrone else does to complain about it.

Understand, we all have the option to find a the silver lining. It’s always there, but it’s always your choice to ignore it, don’t look or avoid the pain of trying to find it.

Today was also my PR for a half marathon!!!

Typical
Every year for the last 4 years I have ran the SF marathon. I do it now to make sure I have a goal that doesn’t allow me to slack off. It is my commitment contract, something I adopted in order to keep me healthy. I would come to understand this as “commitment contract”, as it refers to a phrase that was coined by James Clear, specifically in his self help guide Atomic Habits.

I was also typically happy to be out on a Sunday, enjoying the city, the people, the route. It’s nice to be able to listen to some music, and enjoy the scenery, and hopefully the two passengers that I had with me had an opportunity to see what I could do while remembering then both during my entire run.

I got to have a beer, some sweets and play some video games. Something I typically enjoy doing, but stave off to maintain good habits of remaining progressive. Lately, I’ve been working a bit harder than I have over the past 3 years, and having this typical day for me was worth it’s weight in gold.

My last and important typical item for the day, is reaching out to friends and family after the run, telling them cheers, hoping they are enjoying their Sunday and writing another post to share with whomever reads it, but hopefully the world.
