Learn As Much As I Can About Everything That Interests Me
Music
I’ve always had this strange quirk where beats get stuck in my head—sometimes even beats I haven’t heard yet. I’ll hear a song and immediately start imagining how I would produce my own version.
Creating has always been in me. Give me a piano, some time, and the right software, and I can lose myself for hours. I learned to play a long time ago, and I’d love to get back into it—really study it, experiment, and build something from nothing.
Writing
Writing has become one of the purest ways I express myself. Beyond blog posts and the book I’m working toward, I want to write a TV show about The City—Frisco. Something comedic, something real, something that captures the stories we grew up around but shows them in a brighter, funnier light.
Think The Goldbergs or Black-ish, but rooted in the San Francisco I know.
I also have so many movie ideas that I’ve never made time for. Hopefully I’ll get a chance soon, especially since I may collaborate with a friend on one.
Hooping
I miss hooping. Basketball got me through some of the darkest parts of my childhood—split homes, moving around, living with my grandmother. It gave me a target, a release, and a sense of identity.
My brother Cell inspired a lot of that. It started with hoops but spilled into everything else: work hard, stay locked in, and success will follow.
I love the pace, the competition, the challenge of the game. But age and injuries eventually humble you. I can’t hoop like I used to, but the mentality stuck with me.
Talking to Troubled Youth & People of Color
I joined NSBE, but I haven’t had the bandwidth to participate yet. I plan to. My hope is to help bring more women and more people of color into engineering.
As I moved deeper into college, I saw fewer Black faces and fewer women. That shouldn’t be the norm.
I also want to talk to troubled youth because I was that kid. Life was dark for me in ways I didn’t always admit. But a few people didn’t give up on me, and I’m the result of their belief.
I wouldn’t be here without them. And if I can be that for someone else, I should be.
Learning Spanish
I’ve spent the past two years learning Spanish on and off. Life gets in the way, especially now that I’m focused on earning my PMP, but the desire is still there.
I grew up in the Avenues in the 80s, surrounded by Hispanic culture. I spoke Spanish as a kid but lost it when I moved. Getting it back feels like reconnecting with a part of my childhood—and a part of the city that always felt familiar.
